This project was a collection of assignments we had to combine into a single piece of art.
1.7: Illustrator
For this assignment we were tasked to create a character in Illustrator. The layers should be separate for easy animating.
We first had to create a human form in accurate proportions. We had to do this with basic shapes.
After that, I tested out the program by creating a random character. I wanted to know how to make basic shapes look more detailed/interesting and how “clipping masks” work in Illustrator.
After that, I started working on the character for the final scene. I wanted to create an old man who lives in a tent during a harsh winter. I also chose to make him more stylized because I personally find that more interesting to look at.
2.7: Blender
The background had to be made in Blender. I first thought of a scene that would be possible to make within the time that we had. I then drew two concepts that I thought would fit that criteria. I decided to pick the first concept. A little camp in a harsh winter environment. The animation would be in the campfire.
Once I had decided the concept, I collected a bunch of references for each object that I had to create. I also added pictures of dogs for extra motivation/inspiration.
Then in Blender, I first blocked out the objects and where I would place them.
After I modelled everything, I started working on the snow on mountains. I struggled a lot with this but I eventually decided to create a plane with a height map on top of it.
3.7: After Effects
In After Effects we got a lot of freedom to practice on our own time as well as in class.
I also practiced on my own time, which went really well.
As a final practice assignment, we had to work with puppet animation and 2,5D layers.
After I was done practicing, I started editing the scene in after effects. I mostly added overlay and solid layers to make the scene look more complete. I sadly didn't have much time left to animate the character, but I decided to try some stuff out anyways. I'm way happier with the still image though and I'm still satisfied with the end result.
